Is dog daycare right for your dog?

If you're out at work all day, dog daycare can be a lifesaver: your dog isn't alone, gets exercise and plays with other dogs. But not every dog feels at home in a group. These questions help you work out whether daycare suits your dog.

Which dogs do well at daycare?

  • Sociable dogs who enjoy playing with other dogs.
  • Young, energetic dogs who need plenty of exercise and stimulation.
  • Dogs who struggle with being home alone for long periods.
  • Puppies who have finished their vaccinations and need to learn to mix with other dogs safely.

When it's less suitable

A dog who is anxious or unsure around other dogs, gets overstimulated easily or is reactive may find a busy group stressful. Older dogs and dogs with health problems often benefit more from rest. For them, a dog walker, a home sitter or a small daycare with separate spaces is often a better choice.

What to look for in a good daycare

  • Group size and supervision: how many dogs are there per staff member, and are dogs grouped by size and temperament?
  • Rest: is there a quiet place where dogs can sleep? A full day of play is too much for most dogs.
  • Requirements: does the daycare ask for up-to-date vaccinations and flea and worm treatment? That is a good sign.
  • Introduction: a good daycare wants to meet your dog first, often with a trial day.
  • Space and safety: a clean, secure outdoor area with good fencing, plus shade and water in warm weather.
  • Openness: you're welcome to look around and get feedback at the end of the day.

How to tell your dog enjoys it

A dog who goes in happily, comes home tired but relaxed and eats well is usually doing fine. Watch for signs such as not wanting to go in, being restless or withdrawn at home, or changes in eating or toileting. Build up gradually, for example with half days or two days a week.
