What happens during an annual vet check-up?

A vet examining a dog

An annual check-up is the chance to catch problems before they start bothering your pet. Even if your dog or cat seems healthy, a vet can spot things you won't notice at home. Here's what to expect.

The conversation

The vet usually starts with questions: how is your pet eating and drinking, what are their toilet habits like, has their behaviour or energy changed, and have you noticed anything unusual? Write this down beforehand so you don't forget anything.

The physical exam

Next comes a nose-to-tail examination, which usually takes only a few minutes:

  • Weight and body condition: too heavy or too light?
  • Eyes, ears and nose: signs of infection, discharge or dirt.
  • Teeth and gums: tartar and gum disease are common, especially in older pets.
  • Heart and lungs, listened to with a stethoscope.
  • The belly, gently felt for pain or anything unusual.
  • Skin, coat, joints and nails: lumps, flaky skin, stiffness or fleas.

Vaccinations and prevention

During the check-up the vet looks at which vaccinations are due. Not every vaccine is needed every year; your vet will advise based on age, lifestyle and plans such as travel or a stay at a boarding place or daycare. Worming and flea and tick protection usually come up too.

Extra checks for older pets

For older dogs and cats, the vet may suggest a blood or urine test. These can often show early signs of problems with the kidneys, liver or thyroid. From around seven years old, many vets recommend a check-up every six months.

How to prepare your pet

  • Bring vaccination records and a list of any medication or special food.
  • Get your cat used to the carrier by leaving it open at home for a few days with a blanket inside.
  • Take your dog for a walk before the appointment so they are calmer.
  • Bring a few small treats for afterwards.
